Restaurant That Probably Spits in People’s Food Says It’ll Only Serve Unvaccinated Customers
A California restaurant owner is turning heads with a sign posted outside his establishment that asks patrons to show “proof of being unvaccinated.” The sign is taped on the window of Basilico’s Pasta e Vino, an Italian restaurant in Huntington Beach. “We have zero tolerance for treasonous, anti-American stupidy. Thank you for pondering." Obviously, it’s impossible to show proof that one hasn’t been vaccinated, so clearly this policy is in part a publicity stunt from a master troll. At the same time, the restaurant’s owner, Tony Roman, would like to make it abundantly clear that he’s an anti-science asshole.

Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall will both leave the programme in 2022, the BBC has confirmed. Whittaker, 39, was the 13th actor and the first woman to regularly play the main character in the long-lived series. Whittaker paid tribute to Chibnall and the Doctor Who team in a statement saying: “In 2017 I opened my glorious gift box of size 13 shoes. I could not have guessed the brilliant adventures, worlds and wonders I was to see in them. I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I’ve learnt forever.”

Rich countries’ pandemic selfishness won’t be forgotten
The failure of rich countries to share vaccines and financial assistance with poorer ones during the pandemic will exacerbate the rise in global poverty and could come back to bite them, Nobel Prize-winning economists Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee tell Axios. The IMF this week revised its 2021 growth projections upward for rich countries and downward for developing countries. Low vaccination rates have tempered hopes that low-income economies would come roaring back and the increase in poverty would be quickly erased. Duflo and Banerjee contend that rich countries now have an enormous opportunity to expand access to vaccines and, with interests rates low and economic growth booming, to increase their aid to developing countries.

Amazon Misses Expectations, But Cloud Business Soars
The e-tailer’s $113.08 billion in revenue over the second quarter missed expectations of $115.06 billion, and with its third-quarter outlook projecting sales of $106 billion to $112 billion — not the $118.90 billion expected — shares dropped as much as 5 percent in after-hours trading. Importantly, further disruptions will likely complicate issues like supply chains and warehousing, not to mention staffing. The latter two have posed massive challenges for the company, which most recently saw a notable rise in infections among its Dallas, Baltimore, St. Louis and Las Vegas warehouse personnel, while it scrambles to recruit more workers.

‘You’re the Problem’: When They Spoke Up About Misconduct, They Were Offered Mental Health Services
Former and current Google employees said that H.R. would respond to their workplace complaints by referring them to counseling programs instead of addressing the broader issues. In interviews with The Times, six former and current Google employees recalled that when they spoke up against workplace misconduct, they, too, were offered free short-term counseling — called the Employee Assistance Program (E.A.P.) — or medical leave. This pattern was originally reported by NBC News in March, which cited over a dozen current and former employees. A Google executive, who asked not to be identified because he is not permitted to speak to reporters, said that when employees report difficulties at work with a colleague, Google’s human resources officers are instructed to remind those employees that the company offers up to 20 therapy sessions a year.
