10-June, 2021
Elizabeth Warren @SenWarren (Twitter)
"Bitcoin requires so much computing activity that it eats up more energy than entire countries. One of the easiest and least disruptive things we can do to fight the #ClimateCrisis is to crack down on environmentally wasteful cryptocurrencies."

The Fundamental Question of the Pandemic Is Shifting
From its founding, the United States has cultivated a national mythos around the capacity of individuals to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, ostensibly by their own merits. This particular strain of individualism, which valorizes independence and prizes personal freedom, transcends administrations. It has also repeatedly hamstrung America’s pandemic response. It explains why the U.S. focused so intensely on preserving its hospital capacity instead of on measures that would have saved people from even needing a hospital. It explains why so many Americans refused to act for the collective good, whether by masking up or isolating themselves. And it explains why the CDC, despite being the nation’s top public-health agency, issued guidelines that focused on the freedoms that vaccinated people might enjoy.

A major newspaper just called for the criminal prosecution of Donald Trump
"There is only one way left to restore deterrence and convey to future presidents that the rule of law applies to them. The Justice Department must abandon two centuries of tradition by indicting and prosecuting Donald Trump for his conduct in office." The editors agreed the decision to prosecute a former president for crimes committed in office was a heavy responsibility, but they argued that it was necessary to preserve the rule of law and other democracies had successfully charged former leaders.

New Dino Species Was the Largest Animal to Ever Roam Australia
Earlier this year, paleontologists in Argentina announced the discovery of “titanosaur” fossils, which they say may belong to the largest dinosaur in history; one that weighed 220,000 pounds, and spanned 120 feet long. Now, paleontologists in Australia say they have the fossil remains of what could be a dinosaur just as large, if not bigger. And the behemoth saropaud already stands as the largest animal to ever walk the outback.

Arkansas State Trooper Flips Pregnant Woman’s Car at 60 MPH as She Tries to Pull Over
Video released earlier this week shows an Arkansas State Police officer, Senior Cpl. Rodney Dunn, executing a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver against a pregnant driver during a traffic stop, causing her car to spin out and flip against a concrete median. Dashcam video shows Harper’s vehicle slowing down to 60 mph and turning on her hazard lights as she appeared to look for a place to stop. After the crash, Dunn asked her, “Why didn’t you stop?” Harper replied, “Because I didn’t feel it was safe.” And Dunn said, “Well, this is where you ended up.”
